Iradukunda to Play in USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Junior Guy Iradukunda will begin play in the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday morning. Considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam along with the ITA All-American Championships and the NCAA Championships, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will run from Nov. 3-6 at the fabled USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Iradukunda will face off with Skander Mansouri of Wake Forest in the round of 32 on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

“It’s very hard to get here out of our region,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Only one player is guaranteed. It’s a tough field to make it into and Guy did a great job last weekend, beating four ranked players. It’s quite an accomplishment.”

To earn a spot in the exclusive field of 32, Iradukunda defeated four ITA-ranked opponents en route to the Southeast Regional Championship in Tallahassee two weeks ago.

Iradukunda defeated Georgia’s Wayne Montgomery (No. 16), Miami’s Piotr Lomacki (No. 31), Georgia’s Walker Duncan (No. 81) and Florida’s Chase Perez Blanco (No. 76) in the singles draw after coming back from down match point to advance out of the first round.

“One thing I liked about what Guy did winning the regional championship is he got better every match,” Hultquist said.

Iradukunda became just the second Seminole to win the ITA Regional singles title and enter the Indoor Championships, joining Clint Bowles in 2009. Last season, Benjamin Lock earned an at-large bid to the Indoor Championships, where he won the consolation draw.
