TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – This weekend the No. 44 Florida State men’s tennis team (6-0) travels Waco, Texas at Baylor University with Rice and New Mexico State for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend to earn a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. On Saturday Florida State plays No. 27 Rice at 3 p.m. CT and then will face either No. 8 Baylor or No. 60 New Mexico State.
“We want to go out there to win matches,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We understand that Baylor’s been one of the better teams in the country, they’re very good. Rice has been top of their conference and been one of the better teams in the state of Texas. We know there is real tough competition. We want to build off what we’ve done the first two weekends. I want to be ambitious and take every match one at a time.”
Florida State last played Rice in 2010 where the Seminoles came away with a 5-2 victory. The only Seminole on this year’s roster to post a win is junior Jordan Kelly-Houston. Florida State leads Rice with an all-time 7-4 record.
“Rice is very talented,” continued Hultquist. “They’ve always had very good players. I look for them to be a very strong and talented team. They’ll strike the ball well.”
On Sunday, both the winners match and consolation match will be played at 3 p.m. CT. Florida State will face either Baylor or New Mexico State. The Seminoles are 2-1 all-time against the Bears while they have never faced New Mexico State. The winner will advance to the University of Virginia for the Championships from February 17-20.
