My name is Jason McCormick and I am a senior sprinter for the Florida State Swimming and Diving team. I am finishing my fourth and final year with the FSU Swimming and Diving team while studying Real Estate and Professional Sales. This spring semester, I will provide an inside look into the team and how it transitions into championship season.
After an exceptional fall semester with a six-day training camp in Fort Pierce, Fla.- In fact, collegeswimming.com mentioned us as one of the most improved teams of the first part of the season, we were all eager to get back to work after a lot of us swam best times, set school records and qualified for NCAA’s at the Georgia Invite in December.
The training camp took place December 17-23 at Indian River State College. This annual training camp provides a focused and intense work environment that sets the tone for the upcoming championship season. Although the main objective was training, the coaching staff brought fun activities and traditions to make this trip stand out.
After the first two days of serious training, we took an afternoon to cross train and kayak in Fort Pierce. This was definitely my favorite part of training trip. Activities like kayaking provide a fun way to stay active, enjoy the outdoors, and become closer as a team.
Later that night the coaching staff and seniors went for a special dinner known as Senior Night. This tradition provides the opportunity for the coaches to thank and remember the seniors who have provided leadership throughout their time at FSU.
We continued to train at Indian River for the next two full days. On the last full day of training trip, the team made their way to the beach for an afternoon workout. The workout included an ocean swim and a few team-building exercises. (Picture: men’s beach workout).
After a fun afternoon at the beach, the time had come for the Ugly Christmas Sweater dinner. The team showed its Christmas spirit with a variety of ugly Christmas sweaters.
Overall, my last training trip was a lot of fun and it was productive. I’m excited and eager for our next trip, which will be to Pittsburgh to take on Pitt and Denison at Trees Hall on January 14th.
