TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s Katrin Schmidt was named a Preseason All-American as announced by Soccer Buzz on Monday, August 20. The junior defender was one of 18 student-athletes named to the preseason list in 2007.
Schmidt has started 48 games as the Seminoles’ left back since arriving in Tallahassee in 2005 and is the only returner to start all 26 games a season ago. She is part of a backline that returns all four starters from last year’s team that set single-season records for shutouts (14) and GAA (0.67). Schmidt went on to earn first team All-ACC honors and second team All-America accolades by Soccer Buzz for her outstanding play in 2006. She joined Kristin Boyce as the only Florida State defenders to ever be named to the All-ACC first team. Schmidt was also a finalist for the 2006 Soccer Buzz Player of the Year award.
“What a great honor,” stated Schmidt. “I can’t wait for the season to start. I’m really excited to get back out on the field with my teammates and continue to help our team win.”
The Schleiden, Germany native led the backline in scoring in 2006 tallying 13 points on five goals and three assists. She enters the 2007 season as the second leading returning scorer trailing only Mami Yamaguchi (16 points). Schmidt made school history in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament scoring three first half goals in FSU’s 6-0 win over Jacksonville to become the first Seminole to record a hat trick in postseason competition.
The ACC led all conferences on the Soccer Buzz All-American preseason list with five honorees followed by the Pac-10 and Big 12 Conferences with four student-athletes a piece.
Florida State opens the 2007 season on the road as the Seminoles travel to take on the Portland Pilots on Saturday, September 1.
