PALOS VERDES, Calif. (seminoles.com) – Florida State freshmen Frida Kinhult and Puk Lyng Thomsen are tied for 17th in the individual standings, and the No. 20 Seminole women’s golf team is tied for 12th in the team standings after the first round of the spring-season opening Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Kinhult and Thomsen are only six strokes out of the lead with 36 holes remaining to be played in one of the nation’s most prestigious championships in women’s golf.

No. 12 UCLA, with three players in the top 12 of the individual standings, is in first place in the team standings after a soggy first round of play. The Bruins carded 10 birdies in the first round and hold a four stroke lead over Stanford. Agathe Laisne of Texas and Letizia Bagnoli of Wake Forest are tied for the individual lead with even par scores of 71.

The start of the first round was delayed because of rain after the practice round on Saturday was canceled because of rain. Because of the wet conditions on the course, only three golfers in the 84-player field finished the first round below par and only four more finished at even par.

“I’m really proud of how each of the girls competed as the conditions were very tough,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “We didn’t get a practice round due to the weather so it was a bit of trial and error today to figure out the elevation changes. Today was basically our practice round so I look for us to play better tomorrow. I am very proud of their resilience in today’s round.”

Kinhult played outstanding golf once she got going and finished her round a 1 under par over her final nine holes. She birdied her final hole of the afternoon to finish with a 4 over par score of 75. Kinhult has carded her first 12 collegiate holes at 75 or better and averages 69.33 strokes per round as a Seminole.

Thomsen played her best round as a Seminole as she led the Seminoles with three birdies and finished the round with a 4 over par score of 75. Playing in just her third career collegiate event, Thomsen tied her career-low with her score of 75. Thomsen also carded a 75 in the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate during the fall season.

Florida State will play with Alabama, Washington and Arizona State in Monday’s second round with is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. ET.
