TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Playing in the Garnet and Gold for the first time in their careers over the weekend, redshirt freshman Kiersten Landers and senior Caylan Arnold made the most of their first opportunities as FSU softball players as they were named the ACC Player and Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the conference.
Landers was the catalyst for Florida State last week as the Seminoles went 5-0, including a pair of wins over No. 1 Alabama. The redshirt freshman posted a batting average of .579 (11-for-19) with a double, seven RBI, seven runs scored and two stolen bases. She tallied a .600 on-base percentage over the weekend with a .632 slugging percentage.
In the two games against No. 1 Alabama, she batted .500 (4-for-8) with a stolen base, two RBI, three runs scored, including the game-winning run as the Noles recorded a walk-off win against the Tide on February 7. The outfielder had three three-hit games on the weekend, four games with at least one RBI and scored at least one run in every game.
Arnold was outstanding in the circle for the Seminoles last week as FSU was undefeated in five games at the JoAnne Graf Classic. The senior went 1-0 in two appearances with a 0.00 ERA, 12.1 innings pitched with six hits, one unearned run, two walks and seven strikeouts, while allowing opponents to bat .140 on the weekend.
In the season opener against RV North Carolina, Arnold tossed 7.1 innings and posted seven strikeouts without a walk as the Seminoles earned a 2-1 walk-off victory against the Tar Heels. The senior from Maryville, Tenn., tossed a complete-game shutout in a run-rule victory over No. 1 Alabama as she scattered two hits and two walks over 5.0 innings of work and did not allow a Crimson Tide runner to advance past second base.
