Lonni Alameda Earns Career Win No. 700
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In her 17th season as a head coach, and 12th at the helm of Florida State, Lonni Alameda earned her 700th career win on Sunday with a 12-0 win over Detroit Mercy (0-4) in the final game of the 2020 JoAnne Graf Classic. The No. 8 Seminoles (5-0) defeated the Titans by a score of 12-0, in five innings. Alameda now holds a career mark of 700-318-2 (.687 winning percentage), with a 543-160-1 record (.772) at FSU.
“I had no idea about it,” said Alameda. “I don’t really pay attention to some of those things, but when I saw the water bucket coming, I figured something was going on.
“It was a great surprise and a special weekend with this team. When you reflect on a milestone like this, you think about how many people have been a part of this program, from players to staff, and I’m really lucky to be able to coach.”
Brianna Enter made her first career start for Florida State on Sunday and she allowed a double and a single to the first two batters she faced. The freshman settled in and recorded consecutive strikeouts and induced a pop out to keep the Titans off the board.
Devyn Flaherty opened the FSU second inning with her second triple of the season and scored on an RBI single by Chloe Culp. A fielder’s choice by Josie Muffley and a walk to Morgan Noah loaded the bases with nobody out. An RBI single by Kaia LoPreste and an RBI groundout by Kiersten Landers made it 3-0 Florida State.
A double by Sydney Sherrill and a walk to Cassidy Davis allowed Flaherty to record her second extra-base hit of the inning, launching a three-run HR off the scoreboard in right center to make it 8-0 Florida State.
The Noles added four more in the bottom of the fourth as Landers put down a bunt single to lead off the inning. Sherrill’s second double of the day brought her in to score and moved Sherrill into sole possession of fourth place on the FSU career list with 49 doubles. Leslie Farris pinch ran at second for Sherrill and scored on an RBI triple by Kaley Mudge. Culp closed out the scoring with a two-run home run to left for the 12-0 final score.
Kathryn Sandercock (2-0) entered to pitch the third inning and retired six of the seven batters she faced. Bianca Cruz faced two batters in the fifth inning and struck out both of them, while Kara Bilodeau closed out the game by getting the batter to pop out.
The Seminoles will be back in action on Wednesday, February 12 with a game against Florida A&M at 6:00 p.m. FAMU head coach Veronica Wiggins will be retiring after the 2020 season, and there will be an on-field ceremony to honor career prior to the game.
