TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore leftfielder Jackson Lueck went 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of home runs in leading his Garnet team to a 7-5 win over Gold in the annual intrasquad scrimmage Thursday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. The Orlando native had an inside-the-park home run in the third inning, a towering shot over the right field fence in the fourth and a ground-rule double to deep center field in the ninth.
The Garnet team opened the scoring in the first inning on centerfielder J.C. Flowers’ two-run double to right field that plated fellow freshman Tyler Daughtry and senior Quincy Nieporte. The Garnet team pushed the lead to 7-0 on Lueck’s two homeruns and an RBI double by freshman designated hitter Jared Herron.
The Gold team rallied with four runs without a hit in the fourth inning to trim the Garnet lead. A pair of errors, two walks and two wild pitches cut the lead to 7-4. The final run of the game came in the fifth inning when sophomore catcher Cal Raleigh, a freshman All-American in 2016, opened the inning with a double and scored on sophomore rightfielder Donovan Petrey’s RBI single.
Junior Drew Carlton, last seen tossing a two-hit shutout against No. 1 Florida in the NCAA Super Regionals in June, allowed two earned runs in two innings, striking out three and walking three for the Gold team.
The Garnet team threw Andrew Karp to start the game. He allowed just one baserunner, a Petrey single, in his two innings while striking out three. Every pitcher in the game threw two innings except for Steven Wells, Jr., who entered in the top of the ninth and allowed two hits but no runs.
The game was called after the top of the ninth inning with Gold still to bat. The two-game series will resume Friday at 6 p.m. with the Garnet team batting in an extension of today’s action.
The final game of the fall season will take place Monday at 3 p.m. against the Ontario Blue Jays. Admission for Friday and Monday’s game is free.
