Maguire Named to Unitas Award Watch List

BALTIMORE, Md. – Florida State redshirt senior quarterback Sean Maguire was named to the watch list for the 2016 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award on Thursday.

The honor is given to the nation’s top college quarterback based on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments, and candidates must be a college senior or a fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class.

Maguire posted a 4-2 record as Florida State’s quarterback in 2015, tossing for 1,520 yards and 11 touchdowns against six interceptions while completing 59.3 percent of his passes. He posted a 348-yard three-touchdown passing game versus Syracuse and led the Seminoles to an impressive 27-2 victory at Florida with 160 yards and a score through the air.

The Sparta, N.J., native was knocked out of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl with an ankle injury, but returned to establish career highs in completions (22), attempts (44) and passing yards (392) while nearly rallying the Seminoles to victory against Houston.

Maguire led FSU to a 23-17 overtime victory over Clemson in his only start of 2014, totaling 304 yards and a score.

For his career, Maguire has thrown for 14 touchdowns and 1,975 yards in 21 appearances.

Three Seminoles have previously won the award with Chris Weinke most recently capturing the honor in 2000. He followed Charlie Ward (1993) and Casey Weldon (1991).

The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award will be presented at a ceremony on Dec. 9 in Baltimore.
