Florida State and Maine have faced off nine times, with FSU posting a 9-0 record against the Black Bears. The teams most recently met in 2012 when FSU swept the three-game series by a combined 34-2 margin.

Left-handed pitcher Drew Parrish and third baseman Drew Mendoza, both juniors, were named team captains prior to the season. The two joined head coach Mike Martin on the cover of the Baseball America preview issue that is on newsstands now.

Parrish was a preseason first team All-American from four different publications, while Mendoza was a second team preseason All-American from Collegiate Baseball.

Florida State welcomes 19 newcomers in 2019, including 14 freshmen. During opening weekend, four freshmen are slated to start: catcher Mat Nelson, shortstop Nander De Sedas, leftfielder Elijah Cabell and rightfielder/designated hitter Robby Martin. Junior transfer Nico Baldor will start at first base.

Cabell was named the preseason freshman of the year in the ACC by D1Baseball. De Sedas was named the preseason freshman of the year in the ACC by Baseball America.

Drew Parrish and sophomore CJ Van Eyk will be the Seminoles’ Friday and Saturday starters to open the season. Parrish finished 5-1 with a 2.52 earned run average and 128 strikeouts in 2018. Van Eyk split time between the bullpen and rotation, making five starts and finishing 7-0 with a 2.89 ERA.

Both Parrish and Van Eyk pitched for the Team USA Collegiate National Team over the summer, with Parrish starting against Cuba in Havana on the fourth of July.

Mike Salvatore will open the season at second base with De Sedas playing shortstop. Salvatore, one of just four seniors on the roster, started all 62 games at shortstop in 2018.

Friday’s season opener will be the 40th and final for head coach Mike Martin, who announced in June that 2019 will be his final season. Martin became the winningest coach in NCAA history in FSU’s 3-2, 13-inning win at Clemson last season. Martin enters 2019 13 wins shy of 2,000 for his career.
