⚾️: Mendoza, Parrish Named to Golden Spikes Watch List

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior third baseman Drew Mendoza and junior pitcher Drew Parrish were named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List Thursday afternoon.

Florida State players have won four Golden Spikes Awards, the most in college baseball history. Given to the best player in the nation, Parrish and Mendoza look to join Buster Posey (2008), J.D. Drew (1997), Mike Loynd (1986) and Mike Fuentes (1981) to win the award since the inaugural trophy was presented in 1978.

Mendoza hit .313 with 17 doubles, seven home runs and 44 runs batted in in 2018. In two seasons, Mendoza is hitting .296 with 17 home runs. Parrish was a second team All-American and first team All-ACC selection in 2018, finishing 5-1 with a 2.52 earned run average. Parrish led the Seminoles with 128 strikeouts, including 14 in the ACC Tournament against NC State. Opponents hit just .186 against the left-hander.

Overall, 55 athletes from 18 different conferences are represented on the preseason Watch List. Semifinalists will be announced May 15 with the winner being announced June 14.

Parrish was also named a first team preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball, D1Baseball, Perfect Game and the NCBWA. Mendoza was a second team preseason All-American from Collegiate Baseball.
