Men’s Golf Finishes 10th at Valspar

PALM CITY, Fla. ( – The Florida State Men’s Golf team completed one of the nation’s toughest tournaments on Tuesday afternoon, finishing 10th at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational held at Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.

ACC counterpart Wake Forest (+7) won the arduous 14-team event, while Georgia Tech (+8), Oklahoma State (+9), Texas (+12) and LSU (+12) posted Top-5 finishes.

“We felt like we were playing well coming here this week,” FSU head coach Trey Jones said. “This is a very good golf course that will expose a weakness if you’re not sharp. As with most young golfers, our misses were too big and resulted in scores worse than bogey. We didn’t make enough birdies to create momentum.”

Creating a little momentum for himself in the final round was redshirt junior Cristobal Del Solar, who shot a 1-under 70 and tied for 20th at 5-over for the tournament. The Chile native’s final round was one where he had minimal mistakes, totaling two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars.

In all six tournaments Del Solar has played this year, he has finished 24th or higher. This includes three Top-10 and two Top-5 finishes.

Senior Josh Lee tied Del Solar for the team’s lowest score overall at 5-over, shooting a two-over 73 on his final day. He tied with Del Solar, sophomore Corey Carlson and redshirt freshman Jonathan Keppler for the team lead with three final-round birdies. His only blemish was a double bogey on the long par-4, 493-yard 18th hole.

Keppler tied for 35th overall at 8-over, finishing with a 4-over 75 on Tuesday. Redshirt junior Harry Ellis shot an even 71 in the final round and went 9-over during the three rounds. Carlson tied for 68th at 18-over.

FSU ended the tournament as the leader in the field with 172 pars, as Del Solar led all golfers with 39.

“Our effort is never in question. We need this to be a learning experience and be better prepared when we meet a similar challenge in the post-season,” Jones added. “We will be ready to play in Charlotte.”

Florida State prepares for the Irish Creek Collegiate that begins in 2 ½ weeks at the Club in Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C. The tournament will be held April 8-9.
