The Florida State men’s golf team, under the direction of second-year head coach Trey Jones, opens its spring 2005 season at the 27th annual SunTrust Gator Invitational at the University of Florida Golf Course Feb. 5-6, 2005. The tournament will consist of 54 holes with 36 scheduled to be played Saturday (Feb. 5) and the final 18 scheduled for Sunday (Feb. 6). The course is a par 70, 6,701 yard layout located on the University of Florida campus. The Seminoles finished in seventh place in the event in 2004. Steve Keppler, who played for the Seminoles from 1980-83 and who earned All-America Third Team honors in 1982, carded a six-under par 204 in the 1982 Gator Invitational. His score stands as the best three-round total by a Florida State golfer during the first 26 years of the event. Keppler’s score is tied for the 13th best score in the history of the Gator Invitational.

Florida State is joined by the No. 6 Wake Forest, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 18 Georgia State, No. 21 Tennessee, No. 24 Georgia Southern, No. 25 Purdue, No. 27 South Carolina, No. 30 Florida, College of Charleston, LSU, North Florida, Ohio State, UAB and UCF and in the 27th Annual SunTrust Gator Invitational.

Florida State’s lineup for the SunTrust Gator Invitational includes one senior (Mark Sestilio), one junior (Adam Wallace) and three freshmen (Tommy Rymer, Jonas Blixt and Song Jeon). Rymer, a transfer from the University of Texas is playing in his first event for the Seminoles. He attended Texas for one semester and did not compete in any events before transferring to Florida State for the spring semester. Rymer (Hastings, Minn.) was ranked No. 22 in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Rankings entering his first fall season at Texas. Blixt (Nassjo, Sweden) finished as the Seminoles’ top golfer during the fall season with a 74.33 stroke average while Jeon compiled a 77.83 stroke average in six rounds during two tournaments during the fall season. Sestilio (Punta Gorda, Fla.) has competed in 15 events during his Seminole career and will compete in the Gator Invitational for the first time this weekend. Wallace (Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla.) will compete in the Gator Invitational for the third time during his career after finishing in a tie for 41st place in 2004 and a tie for 67th place in 2003. He carded his career-best three round score of 223 at the 2004 Gator Invitational while his career-low tying single-round score of 70 came in the second round of the same event. Wallace has recorded two single-round scores of 70 during his career.

With a team-leading 74.33 stroke average in 12 rounds during four tournaments during his first season, freshman Jonas Blixt proved that he wasn’t your average college freshman. His lowest round of golf came at the Bank of Tennessee tournament on Sept. 11, 2004 when he shot a two-under par 70. His best overall three-round tournament score of 217 came just two weeks later when he posted a four over par score at the Mason Rudolph tournament.
