Men’s Tennis Begins Play at ITA All-American Pre-qualifying

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team begins play in the first ITA National Championship event of the 2017-18 season on Saturday. Pre-Qualifying starts with 256 athletes and is narrowed down to 32 by Sunday night. Those 32 get placed into a 128 man qualifying bracket that gets brought down to 16 athletes with those 16 individuals advancing into the main draw.

Sophomores Alex Knaff and Rana Roop-Singh Bhullar play on Saturday in the pre-qualifying that goes through Sunday. Knaff got experience in qualifying this summer as he fought through the qualifying stages of four tournaments to reach the main draw of a Futures event. Bhullar did as well, as he fought through qualifying in the Morocco Futures to make it into the main draw.

“I am excited about Alex and Rana getting a chance to play in the ITA All-American this weekend,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “It is a long grind and a tough draw to try and get through. I think one of the things they did this summer was show the ability to get through qualifying at Futures events. Alex qualified four times and Rana did a great job of qualifying in Morocco. They are used to playing multiple matches in the same day. We are looking forward to seeing if these guys can break through.”

Redshirt senior Jose Gracia plays Monday in the qualifying that goes through Tuesday. Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain and senior Guy Iradukunda begin singles play in the main draw on Oct. 5 along with the doubles pair of Gracia and Poullain.
