Tallahassee, FL – The Florida State men’s tennis team saw its run in the ITA Kickoff Weekend come to an end Sunday at the regional in Gainesville. The Seminoles (6-1) fell 4-1 to No. 3 Florida. The teams will meet again this Saturday in Lake Nona, FL in the USTA’s College Match Day event.
“Really hard-fought match,” said FSU Head Coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Despite the loss, It shows the growth we have made as a team. We will get another shot next week in a match that will be broadcast on TennisONE and played in front of the largest crowd in the country.”
The Seminoles took a 1-0 lead following doubles. Andy Petrovic and Youcef Rihane took their match 6-2 and then Maks Silagy and Josh Dous-Karpenschif clinched it on line three with a 7-5 victory upsetting the nation’s 55th-ranked doubles pair.
“I was really pleased how we came out and won the doubles,” said Hultquist. “We beat a ranked team and I thought we were really sharp. I was pleased with how we started.”\
After taking the 1-0 lead, the Seminoles took three of the first six sets to put themselves in position to pull off the upset. The Gators turned the momentum in the second sets though and were able to close out before the third sets on lines one and three could be completed.
“We started out strong in singles with a young team in a big road match,” said Hultquist. “We had a good start winning at one, two and three in the first sets. Florida fought back and won all the second sets and gained control of the match. We had some chances there but they ended up sweeping those sets.”
The Seminoles will head to the USTA National Campus next weekend for College Match Day. The match versus the Gators will be broadcast live by TennisONE and will be played in front of a sold out stadium where the largest crowd to watch a college tennis match is expected.
