RALEIGH, NC. – The 26th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (14-6, 4-3) fell to No. 23 NC State (14-7, 5-2) on Friday.
“Our guys battled today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We had good play today in doubles, especially on court one, getting a win over a ranked team. I thought that was some of the best play all season out of Alex and Sebastian. We had an opportunity to win the doubles point but losing two deuce points on court two cost us. The highlight of the day was Lucas on court one defeating one of the top college players in the country.”
The day got started with the Noles losing the doubles point. NC State took court three 6-4 to start the match. Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila tied the doubles point with a 7-6(2) on court one over the 57th ranked doubles team. NC State capped off doubles with a 7-5 win on court two.
Singles got started as redshirt senior Lucas Poullain tied the match at one. He dominated his match against No. 18 Alexis Galarneau 6-1, 6-2. He has now won 36 of his last 38 matches.
Everything changed after that match as NC State went on to take three straight courts to clinch the match 4-1. The Wolfpack first took court six 6-2, 6-3 to take a 2-1 lead. NC State then took court four in straight sets and court five in three sets to clinch the match.
Knaff and freshman Juan Martin Jalif were unable to finish their matches.
Florida State stays in North Carolina to take on the Tar Heels Sunday at 1 pm.
