TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team was unable to hand the North Carolina their first conference loss of the season, as the Tribe fell to the Tar Heels 6-1 this afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles fall to 12-7 on the season and 4-2 in the ACC. With the win, the Tar Heels advance to 13-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference.
Freshman Mat Cloer and sophomore Jarrod Owen logged the only doubles victory for the Seminoles. The tandem defeated Nicholas Monroe and Daniel Pinchbeck 8-6 at the no. 2 position. North Carolina took the no. 1 and no. 3 doubles matches to enter singles with the point advantage.
In singles, Cloer defeated Trysten Menaine of UNC in a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 decision to earn the Seminoles’ only point. Freshman Chip Webb also forced a third set in his match, but fell to Pinchbeck, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Senior Xavier Luscan, ranked 38th nationally, lost the no. 1 singles match to 53rd ranked Marcio Petrone, 6-2, 7-5.
The Seminoles will take the week off before heading to Atlanta, Georgia to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Friday, April 12th. The Seminoles will then return to Tallahassee to finish out their regular season against the Duke Blue Devils.
