Men’s Tennis Heads Into Second Straight Home Weekend

Tallahassee, Fla.- The Florida State men’s tennis team (3-0) is home again this weekend as they welcome South Alabama (0-0) on Friday (Jan. 17) at 3 p.m. and No. 21 Mississippi State (4-0) on Sunday (Jan. 19) at 1 p.m.  The Seminoles are coming off a 3-0 start to the season at home just a week ago.

“South Alabama is a team that typically makes the NCAA tournament and Mississippi State has won the SEC the last two years so it’s a great home weekend,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “This weekend is an important weekend for us to get off to a good start and play well in doubles as well as get ahead in some of these singles matches.”

The Seminoles come into the weekend with a 22-6 all time lead against South Alabama, including a 5-2 win in January of last year.  This will be USA’s first time competing this season as they are coming off a two-day spring shoot out in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

After last weekend’s competition, the Noles are now 65-11 at home since the start of the 2016 season. The Garnet and Gold are 10-19 all-time against the Bulldogs but have not played Mississippi State at home since 1996.  Florida State looks to take advantage of being at home at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center this time around.

“We really want to get a big crowd out here and have them supporting us,” said Hultquist. “It makes a difference and we want to continue our great home record by having a crowd out here that is enthusiastic and cheering on our guys, that’s when our guys tend to play their best.”
