Men’s Tennis Kicks Off 2019 Season at Home

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 20th ranked Florida State men’s tennis team kicks off their 2019 season this Thursday in a doubleheader against Georgia Southern (12 p.m.)  and Mercer (5 p.m.).

The Noles start the season at home where they have won 74 percent of their home matches (265-91) since the opening of the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center in 1994. Florida State comes into 2019 returning 65 percent of their singles wins from 2018 including their top two win getters.

The Garnet and Gold are 29-6 all-time against Georgia Southern including a 24-4 record at home. The Seminoles have shutout the Eagles 11 times in the series and are currently on a 15 match win streak that saw Florida State last beat Georgia Southern 7-0 in 2017.

Florida State has never lost to Mercer, garnering a 22-0 all-time record against the Bears. This includes a perfect 12-0 record at home and 11 shutout victories. They last played in 2014 when the Noles won 4-0 in Tallahassee.

Numbers to Note

322 – Dwayne Hultquist is the winningest tennis coach in school history with 322 wins, 176 of them over ranked opponents.

65 – Percent of singles wins from the 2018 season return, led by redshirt senior Lucas Poullain who went 30-5 a season ago.

37 – The Seminoles enter the season with 37 years of coaching experience on the sideline. (Hultquist – 19 (Head Coach), 8 (Assistant Coach); DeHeart – 6; Cambier – 4.

29 – The Seminoles have been ranked for in the ITA rankings for 29 straight weeks dating back to February 4, 2017

16 – The Seminoles have been to 16 consecutive NCAA Tournaments (11th longest streak in the nation).
4 – The Garnet and Gold return four of their top five in singles wins from a season ago.

Noles in the Polls
In the latest Oracle/ITA poll, Florida State comes in at No. 20. This marks the 29th straight week that the Noles have been ranked in the ITA Poll dating back to February 27, 2017.

The Seminoles have one ranked singles players in junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar, who comes into the season ranked 84th in the nation.
