March 10, 2002

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team nabbed their first ACC wins over Virginia and Maryland this weekend. The Seminoles defeated the Cavaliers of Virginia 5-2 on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. before traveling north to take on the Maryland Terrapins in College Park, Md. The Seminoles won all nine matches in a 7-0 rout of the Terps. The Seminoles’ record moves to 10-3 on the season, their best start since the 1997 season. The Seminoles’ all-time record against the Terrapins moves to 12-1.

In the Virginia match, the Seminoles swept the doubles matches to head into singles play with a one point advantage. At the no. 2 doubles position, sophomore Romain Jurd easily defeated Stephen Nolen 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Chip Webb also won convincingly at the no. 4 singles position over Jay Curtis, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Alex Herrera and senior Xavier Luscan also won singles points for the Seminoles.

On Sunday, the Seminoles did not lose a match in the victory over Maryland. In doubles, the 37th ranked tandem of Rodrigo Laub and Luscan defeated Haris Causevic and Jonathan Murchison of Maryland, 8-2. Also in doubles play, Jurd and senior Gustav Bucht defeated Chris Chiu and Greg Chambers, 8-3. Herrera and freshman Mat Cloer also won their match in the Seminoles’ sweep of doubles.

In singles play, Webb defeated Greg Chambers 6-1, 6-0 at the no. 4 singles position. Despite valiant efforts by the Terps at the no. 2 and no. 5 positions, as they forced the Seminoles into a third set in each of those matches, the Seminoles were able to pull out the singles sweep.

The Seminoles return to action Tuesday, March 12th against the Clemson Tigers in Clemson, S.C. at 2 p.m.
