Men’s Tennis Opens with FSU Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-  The Florida State men’s tennis team kicks off the 2017 dual match season at home in the Florida State Invitational on Saturday January 14 and Sunday January 15. The first match for the Seminoles will be against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Florida State has won 15 consecutive season openers under head coach Dwayne Hultquist.

“I want consistency. I want our guys to play well every day,” Hultquist said. “I’m looking for them to play hard and give us a good start.”

Florida Atlantic, South Alabama, Mercer, Troy, Florida A&M and Georgia State join the Seminoles and Ragin’ Cajuns in Tallahassee for the two-day competition.

Following the opening match against Louisiana, the Seminoles will face either Florida Atlantic or South Alabama at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

In 2017, the Seminoles look to build on a successful 18-9 2016 season, as well as a dominant fall that saw junior Guy Iradukunda win the ITA Southeast Regional Championship and sophomore Aziz Dougaz finish as a finalist in two ITF tournaments, including the Tallahassee Futures in December.

“We lost our starting three in the lineup, so some of the guys are stepping it up,” redshirt junior Jose Gracia said. “We’ve got great depth on the team, and some of the guys have been great additions to the team.”

In addition to Iradukunda, some new faces include French international Lucas Poullain, a redshirt junior, and two freshmen in Alex Knaff of Luxembourg and Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar of Oslo, Norway, in addition to first-year associate head coach Ryler DeHeart.

With each team guaranteed to play three matches in the Florida State Invitational, the two teams with the highest record after Saturday will play in the championship match at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. The third place match will also be at 12:30 p.m., while the fifth/sixth and seventh/eighth matches will be played at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Admission is free at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center throughout the tournament. In the case of inclement weather, play will be moved to the Indoor Tennis Facility located at 2566 Pottsdamer Rd., Tallahassee, Fla., 32310.
