Tallahassee, Fla.- The Florida State men’s tennis team (1-0, 0-0 ACC) officially began their season today by taking down Florida Atlantic (0-1) 7-0 for their home opener at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
“I thought for this being our first match we played well and got that 7-0 win”, said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “It was good coming out and getting ahead in doubles and clinching that. I think FAU has a good team, they will be competitive to win Conference USA. It was nice to get off with a win and now we will get ready for the double header tomorrow.”
The Noles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking their first doubles point of the 2020 season. The sophomore duo of Bryn Nahrung and Richard Thongoana got FSU on the board with a 6-2 win on court 3.
Senior Alex Knaff started the singles competition off with a bang by defeating No. 58 ranked Maxime Lapraille. He jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set before winning 6-3. The second set wasn’t much different, as he took the set 6-3.
Junior Marcus Walters gave the Noles a 3-0 lead after taking the first set 6-3 and the second 6-2. Freshman Loris Pourroy clinched the win in his first ever collegiate dual match taking down his opponent 7-5, 6-2.
After clinching the match junior Chase Wood, sophomore Juan Martin Jalif and junior Sebastian Arcila would go on to complete the clean sweep with straight set wins of their own.
The Garnet and Gold will be back at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center tomorrow with a double header against ULL (10 a.m.) and FAMU (3 p.m.).
