Tallahassee, Fla.- The Florida State men’s tennis team dominated in their first test of the 2020 season against Penn State. The Seminoles went 5-1 in doubles and 11-1 in singles on the day to cap off their week of training in the Bahamas.
“The boys showed some great toughness today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “It was great to have Marcus (Walters) and Alex (Knaff) play for the first time this year and they handled it really well. This week was exactly what we needed going into our first match at home against FAU on Friday and then the double-header on Saturday.”
The Garnet and Gold started the day with a dominating doubles performance. FSU went 9-0 in the morning over the Nittany Lions in the first preseason exhibition match.
In the second exhibition match against Penn State, things did not look much different. The Seminoles continued their momentum from the morning going 2-1 in doubles. The day ended in exciting fashion as junior transfer Marcus Walters earned his first singles victory as a Florida State Seminole by battling to a 7-6, 6-7, 11-9 win over Penn State’s Ismaal Saadi.
The Noles will be back at it again this weekend as they welcome Florida Atlantic (Jan. 10) to Tallahassee for the first home match of the 2020 season. On Saturday (Jan. 11), Florida State will host Louisiana Lafayette and FAMU to close out the weekend.
