GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Florida State senior forward Jacinta Monroe and NC State freshman guard Marissa Kastanek earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors for the period ending Feb. 21. Monroe helped extend the 10th-ranked Seminoles win streak to five, including a win at No. 19 Georgia Tech, while Kastanek continued to play solid for the Wolfpack, who went 2-0 against league opponents Boston College and long-time foe North Carolina.
Monroe led a second-half rally as Florida State defeated No. 19 Georgia Tech, 69-59, to hand the Yellow Jackets their first home loss of the season. The senior from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., posted 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half, and nine rebounds in Atlanta. She added three blocks and a steal in the winning effort. Monroe followed that performance with a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Noles to a 78-68 win over Virginia Tech. It was the 6-foot-5 Monroe’s third double-double in five games. She also shot 8-of-13 against the Hokies and had five offensive rebounds.
Monroe has turned in double-doubles in three of the last five games and became the first player in FSU history with at least 200 rebounds in each year of her career with the 11-board performance against Virginia Tech. The veteran currently ranks second in the league in blocked shots with 61 rejections over 27 games this season and ranks fourth in the ACC in rebounding (7.7 rpg).
The No. 9 Seminoles will take on No. 21 Virginia Monday night at 7 p.m. The game can be seen on the Regional Sports Network.
