Penn State won the team championship with a five stroke victory over Tennessee – the host school for the event. The Lady Lions took the lead mid-way through the first round and stayed at the top of the team leaderboard for the remainder of the event to take the championship. Paula Reto of Purdue shot a 69 in the third round to win the individual championship by one stroke over by Laura Wearn of Furman.
“The girls had a lot of fun today,” said head coach Amy Bond. “They all made some putts early and maintained their composure on the back side when the wind started to blow a little bit. I was happy that our lowest team score came in the final round and hope that success carries into our next event.”
Negron (Ocala, Fla.) carded a 71 in the final round as she carded four birdies and 11 more holes at par to finish the as the Seminoles’ leader. She played brilliantly over her final 16 holes as she closed the event at 2 strokes under par after opening with a par and a bogey on her first two holes. Negron birded her third hole to take her score down to par and moved to 2 under par with birdies on her seventh and eighth holes. She was under par for the final 11 holes of the round and was as many as two strokes under par during play on both her front and back nine portions of the course.
The eighth place finish was Negron’s seventh top 10 finish of her career and marked her best finish since placing in a tie for seventh at the Spring 2012 ACC Championship. She has now finished in the top eight of the individual standings in three of her last five events dating back to the Spring of 2012.
“I worked all weekend to stay relaxed and tried not to get ahead of myself,” said Negron. “I am happy with my play this weekend in earning a top 10 finish and an even par score.”
“I am very happy for Jessica,” said Bond. “That’s back to back 71’s in a final round, her first top 10 finish of the season and hopefully the start of something really good for a senior who means a lot to this program. She has work hard to carry this success thorough to the Landfall Tradition and into the spring and I know that what one of her goals is for the remainder of the year.”
Hullert (Baerum, Norway) carded her career best 1 under par 71 in the final round and finished in a tie for 27th place with a three-round total of 222.
