Tallahassee, Fla.- The Florida state cross country teams will look to qualify for the NCAA Championships on Friday at the 2023 NCAA South Region Championships which will be held at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Florida.
The women's 6k will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men's 10k at 9:30 a.m. The top two teams will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships that will be held in Charlottesville, Virginia on Nov. 18.
Live timing and live video of the race will be available.
"This is going to be a typical South Region showdown where any of the top three teams could claim the two qualifying spots and one team could be left home for nationals," FSU head men's coach Bob Braman said. "This is the healthiest we've been since Notre Dame where we beat Alabama. Alabama beat Tennessee at SEC's, but by a slim margin. In the end, the toughest team will win. The 10k is the hardest distance to start with, but now adding temperatures in the upper 70's at race time and a hilly course. Let's hope we handle the challenge best."
David Mullarkey and Abdirizak Ibrahim took home All-ACC honors after finishing third in the men's 8k (23.11.5) ahead of Ibrahim in 16th (23:40.1).
The women's team is led by Alyson Churchill, who placed sixth at the ACC Championships in the 6k at 19:49.5, earning All-ACC honors for the first time in her career. Churchill captured All-South Region honors in 2022 by placing 11th in the 6k at 19:59.70.
"This is the toughest our region had been in a very long time," FSU head women's coach Cody Halsey said. "I believe more than two teams will make it out this year, but it's not going to be easy and not one team in the top five will go out without a fight. We are going to have to show up, run hard and be really, really tough. I think we are capable of all of that. We're excited for another chance for these women to be who we know they can be."
Five teams in the women's race are ranked in the USTFCCCA top 30, including No.6 Florida, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 16 Alabama, No. 19 Lipscomb, and No. 24 Ole Miss.
