No. 1 Florida State Avoids Upset With 5-4 Victory Over Siena

Tallahassee, FL – Down 4-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, No. 1 Florida State (15-4) scored two to force extra innings and another in the 10th inning to defeat Siena (0-7) by a final score of 5-4 Thursday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. Richie Smith and Scott Toole had run-scoring base hits in the ninth with Bryan Zech knocking in the game-winner in the 10th inning. Zech’s single to right with two outs scored Tony Richie, who was on second after being hit by a pitch and moving up a base on a groundout.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the second. Justin Arasin doubled and came around to score on a fielding error by FSU third baseman Jeff Probst with two outs.

Florida State tied the game on Toole’s sacrifice fly to center in the bottom half of the inning.

Siena regained the lead in the third, on a solo home run to right by Tony Cipolla.

The visitors increased the lead to 3-1 with another run in the fifth inning. Jim Buckley picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly down the line in right field.

The Seminoles cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning when Jerrod Brown reached on an error, advanced to third on a double by Nick Rogers, and scored on a groundout by Blair McCaleb.

Siena got the run back in the top of the seventh inning to make it 4-2 on a RBI-single by Luis Khoury.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Blair McCaleb walked and Dominic Robinson took over for him as a pinch-runner on first. Zech was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Smith followed with a run-scoring single to right and took second on a throw to third. Toole plated Zech with a base hit to right that tied the score at four apiece. With a runner on third and no outs, the Seminoles were unable to push across the third run of the inning.

Richie was hit by a pitch in the 10th inning and moved to second on a groundout by Kevin Richmond. Zech’s two-out single scored Richie and gave FSU the 5-4 win.

Daniel Hodges (2-0) earned the victory in relief, working 3.1 scoreless innings.

The Seminoles travel to Gainesville for two games against Florida on Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday (3:00 p.m.). The Gators come to Tallahassee on Sunday for a 2:00 p.m. meeting to complete the three-game set. The pitching match-ups are: FSU LHP Matt Lynch (4-0, 2.45 ERA) vs. UF LHP Jimmy Ramshaw (1-0, 3.72 ERA) on Friday, FSU RHP Blair Varnes (2-2, 4.35 ERA) vs. UF RHP Alex Hart (4-0, 0.00 ERA) on Saturday, FSU RHP Robby Read (3-0, 2.89 ERA) vs. UF LHP Keith Ramsey (1-0, 7.80 ERA).
