TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 1 Florida State (13-4) defeated Western Carolina (4-3) by a score of 13-3 at Dick Howser Stadium on Tuesday behind a strong pitching performance from junior right-hander Robby Read (3-0). The junior right-hander struck out four and walked two, while allowing just one hit in six scoreless innings of work. Junior Jerrod Brown led FSU’s 13-hit attack with two hits, including a three-run double that started the scoring in the second inning. Tony Richie, Blair McCaleb and Bryan Zech all recorded home runs in the victory.

The Seminoles took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on just one hit. McCaleb, Scott Toole and Mike Futrell walked to load the bases for Brown’s three-run double.

Richie put FSU up 4-0 with a solo home run, his second of the season, in the bottom of the third inning.

FSU scored two more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Brown and a Futrell run on a throwing error.

In the bottom of the fifth, Scott Toole knocked in a pair of runs with a triple down the right field line to push the lead to 8-0.

Florida State put the game out of reach with five runs in the sixth inning. Richie recorded an RBI-single, McCaleb launched a three-run homer to right center and Zech made it 13-0 with his second homer (solo) of the season.

The Catamounts scored their only runs of the game when Billy Franchi knocked in a run with a double and Todd Buchanan recorded a two-RBI single to center off reliever Jason Newlin.

Brown had a career-high four RBI and was one of five Seminoles two pick up two hits on the afternoon (Richie, McCaleb, Zech, & Toole).

Justin Miller and Chris Whidden each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Newlin gave up three runs on four hits in one inning of work.

Brad Josey (0-1) took the loss for WCU, surrendering six runs (five earned) on five hits in 3.1 innings. Josey walked five and struck out four.

The series concludes Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium. FSU left-hander Trent Peterson (0-1) is scheduled to face Western Carolina right-hander Jared Burton (1-1). Florida State will host Siena on Thursday (3:30) before traveling to Florida on Friday.
