Florida State, ranked No. 1 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches poll for the third straight week, hosts the Pittsburgh Panthers this weekend for a three-game set. The Seminoles did not play during the week after sweeping a two-game series with then-No. 6 Florida by scores of 5-4 and 9-4. FSU has won five straight and is now 6-2 on the year against Top 10 teams. LF Tony McQuade (.459, 1 HR, 9 RBI) is expected to see time at DH after being out the last three weeks with a groin injury. SS Stephen Drew (.346, 1 HR, 7 Runs) has missed a month with a fractured left foot and is expected to miss at least two more weeks. The Seminoles will go with LHP Matt Lynch (4-0, 2.67 ERA) on Friday, RHP Robby Read (3-0, 3.44 ERA) on Saturday and RHP Blair Varnes (2-2, 4.35 ERA) on Sunday.

The Panthers are 10-0-1 on the 2002 season after playing their last eight games at the Homestead Challenge in South Florida. Pittsburgh defeated Fairfield 7-5 in its last game in Homestead on Wednesday. RHP Joe Engel (3-0, 1.20 ERA) will start Friday and RHP Scott Schultz (2-0, 0.00 ERA) will start Saturday. Sunday’s starter has not yet been determined. 1B Brad Rea (.422, 3 HR, 18 RBI) and SS Bryan Spamer (.439, 3 2B, 11 RBI) lead the Panthers offensively.

Florida State leads the all-time series 16-0, which dates back to 1983. The last meeting came in 2000, with the Seminoles sweeping the three-game series in Tallahassee (6-1, 12-0 & 14-4).

All three games will be carried live on the Seminole Baseball Radio Network, which consists of 12 affiliates across the state of Florida. Lee Bowen and Jim Crosby (WFLA News Radio 1270 of Tallahassee – FSU’s flagship station) will begin coverage 15 minutes prior to game time. Live stats can also be followed via the internet at
