No. 1 Shooting Guard Ta’Niya Latson Signs with Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. (Seminoles.com) – The nation’s top shooting guard in the 2022 recruiting class has signed her National Letter of Intent to play for Florida State.

Five-star guard Ta’Niya Latson, a native of Miami, is ranked 14th overall according to the ESPN Hoopgurlz Recruiting Rankings. But among 2-guards in the prep circuit, Latson is the nation’s best, making an enormous name for herself at Westlake High School in Atlanta.

“Ta’Niya is a dynamic player on both ends of the floor,” FSU Head Coach Sue Semrau said of Latson. “Her passion for the game and work ethic are what drew me to her. The way she plays each game is something her teammates and our fans will love to experience. I am so excited to welcome Ta’Niya to our Seminole Family.”

Latson has proven to be proficient in many areas. In her junior season, she averaged 23.7 points, 2.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 0.5 blocks for a Westlake squad that was thoroughly dominant and finished as the nation’s No. 1 ranked team according to Maxpreps. She shot a remarkable 62 percent from the floor in her junior year.

Her tremendous junior year, which included leading the nation’s top team in scoring, led to being named a Maxpreps All-American and being selected to the Atlanta Journal Constitution Class 6A First Team.

As she enters her senior season, she was recently announced on the Naismith High School Girls Player of the Year Watch List.

The 5-foot-9 playmaker guided Westlake to the GEICO Nationals title in Fort Myers, Fla., after scoring 31 points to defeat Paul VI of Chantilly, Va., 70-50. The previous game she dropped 26 points against Fremont of Plain City, Utah.

As a sophomore in the 2019-20 season, Latson averaged 16.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.7 steals in 20.6 minutes for Westlake. She helped her team to a State 7A title after defeating Collins Hill, 72-53.

Latson chose Florida State over several other schools, including Baylor, Georgia, Kentucky, Miami, NC State, Texas and Virginia Tech.

FSU is coming off a 2021 recruiting class where it landed the nation’s 13th-ranked class that includes current freshmen O’Mariah Gordon (Bradenton, Fla.), Makayla Timpson (Edison, Ga.) and Mariana Valenzuela (Mazatlán, Mexico). All three have made major contributions through FSU’s first two games this season vs. UNF and Milwaukee.

Gordon, another guard, was also heralded as Florida’s top-ranked player overall last season.
