Box Score

Tallahassee, Fla. – Richie Smith’s base hit to right center knocked in John-Ford Griffin in the bottom of the 10th inning to give No. 11 Florida State Seminoles (26-7, 10-1 ACC) a 6-5 victory over No. 24 Wake Forest (19-9, 6-5 ACC) at Dick Howser Stadium. Griffin, who was intentionally walked with two outs and nobody on, stole second and scored on Smith’s bloop single on a 3-2 count.

Right before Smith’s game-winning hit, a streaker sprinted from foul pole to foul pole across the outfield causing a short delay. The streaker jumped over the wall in left and ran to a waiting get-a-way car in the parking lot.

The Demon Deacons took the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Nick Blue drew a bases loaded walk and Corey Slavik picked up the second RBI with a single to center.

FSU took the lead with a three-spot in the fourth inning. After Ryan Barthelemy singled, Karl Jernigan ripped his first home run of the season over the wall in left. Jernigan’s homer was the first 38 games, dating back to the NCAA Super Regional against Miami (6/3/00). After Nick Rogers reached on an error and stole second, Tony Richie followed with a RBI-single up the middle.

Wake regained the lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Carlos Brackley. Ryan Johnson was aboard after singling to right prior to Brackley’s home run.

WFU pushed the lead to 5-3 when Nick Blue scored on an RBI-single by Johnson.

The Seminole tied the game at five in the seventh inning. Barthelemy walked, Jernigan was hit by a pitch and Rogers singled to load the bases with no outs. Jeff Probst knocked in Barthelemy with a sacrifice fly to center and Scott Toole knocked in Jernigan with an RBI-groundout.

Justin Lord (2-1) picked up the win in relief, working a scoreless tenth inning with one strikeout. Starter Marc LaMacchia went five innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits. LaMacchia struck out seven and walked two.

WFU reliever Dave Bush took the loss after giving up three runs in the final 4.1 innings.

The two teams will finish the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. FSU RHP Robby Read (4-3, 4.12 ERA) is scheduled to face WFU LHP Josh Bartlett (0-0, 4.79 ERA).
