COLUMBUS, Ga. – In a battle between the NFCA Leadoff Classic’s top two offensive teams on day one of the tournament, 13th-ranked Oklahoma shutdown Florida State, 3-0, at the South Commons Complex Saturday morning. The Seminoles dropped to 9-6 on the season and 2-1 in the Leadoff Classic; the Sooners improved to 14-4 and 3-0 in the tournament after clinching their 12th straight victory.
OU senior NFCA All-American pitcher Kami Keiter (6-1) threw for her 35th straight scoreless inning against the Seminoles and logged her fourth shutout of the season. FSU senior All-American ace Casey Hunter (4-5) earned the loss.
Florida State struggled offensively and managed just three hits in the contest. In the 3rd, 4th, and 5th inning the Tribe had players left stranded in scoring position. Both squads played error-free ball.
The Sooners got things started in the first and a Heather Scaglione RBI double scored OU’s Kristin Vesley who had reached base on a walk. In the third inning, two runs and three hits were recorded for Oklahoma. Norrelle Dickson and Vesley had back-to-back singles and Scaglione brought in Dickson on a fielder’s choice. Jessica Leslie doubled in Scaglione for the final run of the game.
For the remaining four innings, Hunter held the Sooners to just one hit and no runs.
Offensively, senior shortstop Tatiana George, sophomore second baseman Veronica Wootson and sophomore right fielder LaShaun Davis tallied one hit, respectively, while senior third baseman Lesley Palmer totaled one sacrifice bunt. Freshman catcher Melissa Wood had eight putouts.
