The No. 15 Florida State women’s tennis team (12-9, 6-4) closed out its regular season Sunday, April 18 facing the nation’s top team and Atlantic Coast Conference Champion in No. 1 North Carolina. The Tar Heels were too much for the Seminoles as they surpassed FSU 4-0 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
“It’s always good to face top 10 teams heading into the post season,” FSU head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “We have been exposed to a lot of highly ranked teams this season. Yesterday we didn’t come quite prepared in the way we needed to and today I think we did a much better job. Regardless of the score we did a much better job competing and working a lot harder than yesterday. We needed to see that heading into the ACC Tournament.”
Both teams continued to train for the post season by stopping play as soon as a team scored four points.
UNC kicked off the momentum early as they posted two consecutive wins on court one and two to take the doubles point.
Despite their efforts, Lauren McCreless and Francesca Segarelli fell on court one to Sanaz Marand and Katarina Tsang 8-1, while the twosome of Jessica Sucupira and Federica Suess lost to Sophie Grabinski and Jelena Durisic 8-3 on court two.
Singles saw the Seminoles continuing to battle North Carolina’s strength as only two `Noles won their first set.
UNC marked its second point as No. 23 McCreless fell to No. 30 Marand 6-3, 6-1 on court one.
Suess was also unsuccessful on court five as the junior lost to Shinnan Featherston 6-3, 6-3 to mark UNC’s third point.
The Tar Heels’ fourth point came on court two as Katie Rybakova was overpowered by No. 42 Tsang 6-2, 6-4.
“A lot more work was put in today,” Coach Hyde said. “You can tell North Carolina is good. They are a confident team. They have been on quite a roll this semester. It’s good for us to see how they approach this situation. They were a bit more consistent than we were in a number of ways. In order for us to take that jump to the next level we are going to have to get a little down and dirty. We need to make sure we are not expecting things to come. We need to go out there and get them.”
Up next for the squad will be the ACC Championship in Cary, NC beginning Thursday, April 22 with the first round matches. Fans can find all information regarding the championship on www.theacc.com.
