Blacksburg, Va.– After a much-needed, mid-season rest, Florida State’s No.15-ranked women’s tennis squad returned to the courts this morning to defeat ACC foes No. 47 Virginia Tech 7-0. The Seminoles (12-2, 2-1) swept both the doubles and singles competitions to remain undefeated against the Hokies (12-6, 0-4).
Senior No. 100 Carolin Walter clinched the Seminoles’ 12th victory of the year on court three with a powerful 6-4, 6-0 win over the Hokies’ Jessica Long. Florida State sophomore Jessica Wente took the Seminoles’ first singles victory of the day with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of J.J. Larson. Freshman Federica Suess finished next, scoring FSU’s third point of the day in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Virginia Tech’s Holly Johnson.
Florida State also won the doubles point with a complete sweep of the competition. Walter and Suess also clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win over the Hokies’ Long and Yasmin Hamza. Junior Ania Rynarzewska and freshman Katie Rybakova, the No.53 doubles pairing the country, defeated the Hokies’ Jessica Brouwer and J.J. Larson 8-4 for the Seminoles’ first victory of the day.
The Seminoles dominated the Hokies across the board, allowing just one match to go into three sets after Rynarzewska dropped her first set 4-6 before rebounding to defeat the Virginia Tech’s Brouwer 6-2, 6-3.
Florida State will make the short drive to Charlottesville, Va. to face ACC opponents, No. 50 University of Virginia tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
