No. 17 Men’s Tennis Falls To No. 31 UNC

Tallahassee, FL – For the fourth match in a row, the 17th-ranked FSU men’s tennis team hosted a top 40 ACC opponent. On Sunday, the Seminoles fell behind early, pushed to narrow the gap but eventually fell to No. 31 North Carolina 4-2. This was the fifth top 40 opponent the Seminoles have faced in the last six matches and FSU now stands at 10-5 on the season.

“I thought we fought hard and we were close,” said FSU Head Coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We had chances. We served for the second set on line six and got back to 5-5 at three. We really needed those matches to go three sets. We got the wins at four and five and we were battling at one and two but I felt that was the key to it. North Carolina plays really good doubles and they got us pretty good there. That is something we are going to have to work on and get better at.

“It was a hard-fought win for North Carolina and now we go on the road. We have played a lot of the better teams in the conference and now we go on the road and it will be important to play well on this first trip.”

UNC took an early 1-0 lead with a win in doubles. FSU get an early win on court four as Josh Dous-Karpenschif won 6-3, 6-2 to move to 8-2 on the season. UNC moved back in front 2-1 with a win on line three. The Tar Heels moved one step closer to closing out the match with a win on court six. Youcef Rihane helped close the gap with his win on court five 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). With the Heels still leading 3-2, Loris Pourroy had just won a tiebreaker to push his match to a third set but before he got the opportunity UNC was able to close out court two in the third set for the win.

“Joshua and Yucef continued to have really good weekends beating really good players,” said Hultquist. “They are both really improving and I am pleased with how they are playing.

The Seminoles head on the road for the first time in a month next week as they continue ACC play traveling to Notre Dame and Louisville. For more information on the Seminole Men’s Tennis program, please follow us on social at FSUMTennis (IG) and @FSU_MTennis (TW) and log on to Seminoles.com.
