Tallahassee, FL –
For only the second time in 17 outings, the 16th-ranked Florida State softball team (24-5) lost at the Seminole Softball Complex when Nebraska junior Leigh Ann Walker (7-4) threw a complete game two-hitter to lead the 18th-ranked Cornhuskers (16-9) to a 3-0 victory Wednesday evening. The loss is just the second for FSU in its last 13 games and was junior Leslie Malerich’s (10-2) first loss in seven outings dating back to February 23, 2001.
“I am a little disappointed that we weren’t been able to generate much offense,” said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. “I think Walker pitched a great game and shut us down in the few chances we had to score. We had two girls hit doubles and we weren’t able to advance or score them.”
All of the Cornhuskers runs came in the third inning off of Florida State starter Leslie Malerich. Junior Cindy Roethemeyer hit a one-out single to the right side but it looked like she would remain there after Peaches James grounded out to Malerich for the second out of the inning but Leigh Suhr followed James with a single to left field which moved Roethemeyer to third. After Suhr stole second, senior Kim Ogee knocked a two-run double to left center and then scored on Amber Burgess’ RBI single.
The Seminoles had a few chances to get back in the game but Walker continually answered the challenge. In the fifth inning, senior Robyn Gauger knocked a two-out double to left center but was stranded after Monique Marier struck out swinging. Freshman Elisa Velasco ripped a leadoff pinch hit double to start the sixth but the Seminoles struck out, fouled out and popped out to end the inning. Walker shut the Noles down in the seventh and recorded seven strikeouts and issued just two walks. With Wednesday’s win, Walker improved to 2-0 lifetime against FSU. Her first victory came as a freshman when she struck out 15 Seminole batters and won a 1-0 decision at the 1999 NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Florida State will face Iowa State (8-8) Thursday, March 15 before hosting the Tallahassee Democrat/Seminole Invitational March 16-18 at the Seminole Softball Complex. All games are free to the public and the Seminole Softball Complex is located on the campus of Florida State University.
