No. 19 Florida State Baseball Defeats Illinois State 6-3

Tallahassee, Fla. – No. 19 Florida State (12-5) defeated Illinois State (3-3) by a final score of 6-3 on Tuesday night in front of 1,198 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. Brian Schultz (2-0) picked up the win after working four innings of relief and allowing only one run on one hit with two walks and five strikeouts. Kevin Lynch earned his second save of the season after closing out the final 1.1 innings with no hits and one strikeout.

DiCarlo Thompson made his first-career start for the Seminoles and worked 3.2 innings before leaving for Schultz after the 85 minute rain delay. Thompson gave up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

In the top of the first, Jay Molina gave the Redbirds an early 2-0 lead with a two-run homer to left on a 3-2 pitch from Thompson.

FSU got one back in the third when Eddy Martinez-Esteve singled home Bryan Zech.

The Seminoles took the lead in the sixth inning on back-to-back RBI-singles from Shane Robinson and Gibbs Chapman.

Illinois State tied the game in the seventh at three thanks to a pair of Florida State errors. FSU answered back in the bottom half of the seventh with a run on a Ryne Malone single to regain the lead at 4-3.

Florida State added two more in the eighth on a two-run single by Chapman for the final margin of 6-3.

Robinson led the Seminoles offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Chapman had a good day at the plate as well, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Eric Theisman took the loss for the Redbirds after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in four innings of relief. Theisman walked one and struck out four.

Florida State will take on the Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Freshman right-hander Brian Chambers will make his first-career start for the Seminoles.
