COLUMBIA, S.C. – The second-ranked Florida State beach volleyball team (19-0) remained unbeaten with a pair of 5-0 wins over No. 17 Georgia State (14-7) and No. 16 Stetson (12-7).
No. 2 Florida State 5, No. 17 Georgia State 0
Florida State started the day off with their 11th ranked win and their 11th 5-0 sweep with their win over No. 17 Georgia State.
Torrey Van Winden and Keara Rutz got things started for the Noles with a straight-set win on court two, their 17th win together this season. They jumped out to a 7-3 lead before GSU took an 11-10 lead. That did not phase the Seminole duo as they took a 17-16 lead on their way to a 21-17 first set win. In the second set, they jumped out to an early 5-2 lead as they took the second set 21-13.
Molly McBain and Alaina Chacon expanded the Seminole lead to 2-0 with their 12th win together this season on court one. The match was close early as McBain and Chacon were only up 12-11. They then turned it on, winning nine of the final 11 points to take the first set 21-13. The second set remained close the entire way but the FSU pair would take it 22-20.
The final three courts would all go three sets and resulted in three Florida State wins. Kate Privett and Jenna Johnson clinched the match for the Garnet and Gold on court five. It was their second match-clinching point this season. The pairing cruised to a 21-12 first set win, before losing 21-15 in the second set. Things were back in forth in the third and final set but Privett and Johnson would take it 16-14.
With the match already in hand. Florida State would earn wins on courts three and four. Sara Putt and Maddie Anderson made it 4-0 with a 21-16, 16-21, 15-10 win. In the third set, they trailed 9-7 and would win eight of the final nine points.
Payton Caffrey and Madison Fitzpatrick finished off the sweep with their third win together on court four. They lost the first set in a close one, 23-21, but rebounded to win the next two sets, 21-16, 15-12.
No. 2 Florida State 5, No. 16 Stetson 0
Florida State finished off the day with their second sweep over a ranked team on the weekend with a 5-0 win over No. 16 Stetson. It was the Seminoles’ 12th sweep of the season and the 12th win over a ranked team in 2021.
Alaina Chacon and Molly McBain took care of business on court one with a 21-15, 21-13 win, giving the Seminoles an early 1-0 lead. Kate Privett and Jenna Johnson extended the FSU lead to two and improved to 14-0 on court five together this season. They took the first set 21-17 and dominated the second set 21-11.
Torrey Van Winden and Keara Rutz did what they do best and clinched their ninth match of the season together on court two. They took the first set 21-18 and cruised to a 21-11 second set victory. Van Winden and Rutz improved to 18-1 together on court two.
Florida State finished off the Hatters of Stetson with wins on courts three and four. Payton Caffrey and Madison Fitzpatrick extended the Seminole lead to four with a 21-17, 21-13 win on court four. Maddie Anderson and Sara Putt capped off the day with a three-set win. The duo lost the first set 21-19 but rebounded to take the final two sets 21-13, 15-8.
Florida State caps of the Gamecock Grand Slam tomorrow with matches against No. 9 TCU (9:00 am) and No. 15 South Carolina (1:00 pm).
