No. 2 Florida State Baseball Uses Four Home Runs To Down Evansville 11-1

Tallahassee, Fla. – No. 2 Florida State (8-1) hit four home runs en route to an 11-1 victory Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of Evansville (0-3) at Dick Howser Stadium. Junior first baseman Jerrod Brown went 2-for-3 on the afternoon and hit his first home run of the season. He also scored two runs and had two RBI. Junior left-hander Trent Peterson (1-0) worked five scoreless innings and only gave up three hits to earn his first win of the season. The Seminoles have now won five straight.

FSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first behind Brown’s two-run homer to left. Stephen Drew scored the inning’s first run after he led off with a triple to left center and then scored on a wild pitch by Evansville starter Adam Rogers.

The Seminoles added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 7-0. Tony McQuade got the inning started with a single to right and scored on a hit and run with Eddy Martinez-Esteve. Tony Richie smashed his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to bring home Martinez-Esteve. Richie hit .455 for the series with two homers and nine RBI. Brown followed with a double to right center, moved to third on Chris Hart’s single and later scored when Aaron Cheesman grounded into a double play.

Daniel Wardell and Derrick Smith each hit two-run home runs in the bottom half of the seventh to extend the Seminole lead to 11-0.

Evansville finally got on the board as Eric Jones singled and scored on Mike Snyder’s double down the left line.

Florida State’s relievers (Kevin Lynch, Rhett James, Matt DiBlasi and Daniel Hodges) continued to pitch well as they combined for five strikeouts, no walks and one run on two hits in the final four innings.

Adam Rogers took the loss for Evansville, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits over five innings.

The start of the game was pushed back 70 minutes due to the rain.

The Seminoles will be back in action on Friday against Appalachian State at Dick Howser Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s game will begin at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday’s first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. LHP Matt Lynch (3-0), RHP Mark Sauls (2-0) and Peterson are scheduled to start for FSU on the mound.
