TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 21 ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (6-0) kept their win streak alive as they defeated Furman in the finals of the FSU Spring Invitational and captured head coach Dwayne Hultquist’s 300th career win.
“It was a good weekend for us,” said Hultquist. “Going through the tournament without dropping a point is a significant achievement and showed that we are ready to go every day.”
“I didn’t even realize it until some of the guys told me before the match. You get some of those milestones as a function of doing this for a long time, but it is nice to get to 300 wins.”
Seniors, and twins, Terrance and Terrell Whitehurst finished their impressive doubles performance this weekend as they earned the Seminoles’ first doubles win on court three, 6-1. Senior Guy Iradukunda and junior Aziz Dougaz clinched the doubles point for the Garnet and Gold on court two with a 6-2 win over Furman’s Cameron Green and Drew Singerman.
“I really liked how the Whitehursts played doubles today,” said Hultquist. “They got us off to a quick start and helped us to the early doubles point.”
In singles, the top of the lineup performed well, just like they have all season long. Dougaz earned his sixth win of the season and fourth on court number one to give Florida State a 2-0 lead. Iradukunda earned his sixth win as well, this time on court three with a 6-3, 6-2.
Redshirt senior Jose Gracia clinched the match for the Noles improving him to 3-1 on the season. He took down Drew Singerman 6-2, 6-4 on court four.
“This weekend prepares us for later this season when you have to play back to back days in tough matches,” said Hultquist. “We have played six matches in the last 10 days and that is a lot of matches and it has made us sharper.”
The Seminoles are back on the court Saturday, January 20 to take on Florida Gulf Coast (10 a.m.) and East Tennessee State (3 p.m.).
