No. 21 FSU Falls To No. 2 Northwestern 7-0

Feb. 7, 2010

EVANSTON, Ill. – After riding the wave of success with a three-match winning streak, the No. 21 Florida State women’s tennis team (3-2) suffered its second loss of the season to No. 2 Northwestern, 7-0. The Seminoles will now turn their attention to the ITA Indoor Championships beginning Friday, February 12, in Madison, Wisconsin.

“We got beat by a solid Northwestern team today,” FSU Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. “It was very good for us to see a top 5 nationally ranked opponent as we head into the National Team Indoors next weekend.”

FSU felt Northwestern’s force early on with the Wildcats posting back-to-back doubles wins to earn the 1-0 lead into singles. However, court two saw FSU win its only match of the day with Federica Suess and Katie Rybakova trumping Britany Wowchuck and Maria Mosolova 8-6.

Singles was no different for Florida State with the Wildcats dominating all six courts.

As the only Seminole to push to a third-set match, No. 62 Francesca Segarelli battled No. 48 Samantha Murray until the very end. The first set featured Murray surpassing Segarelli 6-2, but the second set is when the Seminole fought back to post a 6-0 winto push the match into a third set. It was there that Murray’s power would be too much for Segarelli as the ‘Nole fell 6-3.

“It was very clear what the difference was in many of our matches today with the three most glaring being execution, the ability to outlast, and closing out games when having the lead,” Coach Hyde said. “We competed very hard at nearly every spot and never rolled over, regardless of the score. Today was a tough loss but we will take it on the chin for the day, regroup, and get ourselves prepared for another opportunity filled weekend ahead. We have some great things ahead of us.”

Luckily for the Seminoles, the quick turnaround will leave no room to hang their heads as the squad is scheduled to leave for the ITA Indoor Championships Wednesday with the first match being Friday morning at 9 a.m. Keep up with the Garnet and Gold in the team’s first trip to the championships as video diaries and photo galleries will be posted on www.seminoles.com.
