PDF Box Score

FORT WORTH, Texas — Wrapping up the three-match weekend in Fort Worth, No. 22 Florida State (3-2) swept host school RV TCU (3-3) on Sunday by the score of 25-20, 25-20, 25-18. The Seminoles picked up their first true road win over the Horned Frogs to improve to 4-0 all-time against TCU, dating back to 2007.

Juniors Jasmyn Martin and Taryn Knuth were named to the Fight In The Fort All-Tournament Team, as Martin was second on the team with 25 kills and added seven digs and five blocks, while Knuth tallied 15 blocks and topped the team with a .406 hitting percentage on the weekend with 16 kills.

“I loved the way we rebounded from yesterday’s loss,” said FSU head coach Chris Poole. “I thought that we played with much better control today, and in preseason, it is still about finding yourself. We have a lot of players coming off the bench that are doing well, which speaks to the depth of our team. Because not everyone is going to have their best day, and it is good to have different options. I was really proud of the way they competed today. Yesterday was very disappointing for them, so it was good to see them snap back and play much better today.”

It was a strong start for the Seminoles in set one as Emma Clothier and Martin put down early kills and the duo combined for a block as FSU opened with a 3-0 lead. The Seminoles grew the lead up to 15-6 on a pair of blocks by Knuth and Marissa Stockman, kills by Morgan Chacon and an ace by Lily Tessier. FSU made it an 11-point advantage at 20-9, before TCU worked back into the set with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 21-15. The Horned Frogs held off three set points, before serving into the net to give the Noles a 25-20 win.

TCU opened the second set with the first two points, but the Seminoles kept it close and even tied the set at 5-5 and 8-8, until an ace by Adrian Ell gave the Noles a 13-12 lead. Overall, Florida State used a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead at 17-12. The Noles held onto their advantage, using kills by Knuth and Stockman, along with a set-clinching kill by Payton Caffrey to post a 25-20 set win.

It was back and forth to begin the third set, though the Seminoles were able to create a 9-5 lead, highlighted by an ace by Taylor Roberts. TCU worked back to tie the match at 12-12, but were unable to take the lead. Kills by Martin, Clothier and Knuth, along with aces by Tessier and Caffrey, kept FSU in control as the Noles closed out the sweep with a 25-18 third-set victory.

Caffrey (11) and Martin (10) had double-digit kills on Sunday, while Knuth and Clothier finished with .625 and .556 hitting percentages, respectively. Florida State posted five aces, including two from Tessier, and finished with seven blocks involving five different players on the afternoon.

The Seminoles return to Tallahassee for their home opener next weekend as Florida State hosts Stony Brook, St. John’s and Florida A&M in the Home2Suites Tallahassee Invitational on September 13-14.
