TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 23 Florida State women’s tennis team (8-3) won their first ACC match of the season as they took down No. 31 Clemson (5-5).
“This was another good road win for us today against a good Clemson team,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “The conditions were far from perfect. The winds were strong from the start of the match to the end. The girls did a great job and responded perfectly to the weather.”
The Seminoles won their ninth doubles point of the season after taking the matches on courts one and two. Sophomore Andrea Garcia and freshman Petra Hule got the doubles scoring started for the Noles as they earned their fifth doubles win of the season. The duo took down the Tigers 6-3. Clemson tied it up as they won on court three 6-3 against senior Gabby Castaneda and sophomore Nandini Das. It all came down to court one as sophomore Carla Touly and junior Ariana Rahmanparast lead 5-3. Clemson came back to tie it at 5-5 before the Seminoles pulled away to take court one 7-5 and take the 1-0 lead in the match.
“I am really happy with the doubles point,” said Hyde. “Every match was tight and we did a good job of stepping up when we needed to, especially given the windy conditions.”
In singles, the Seminoles ran through the Tigers, winning three of the matches in straight sets. Das was the first one to finish as she won 6-0, 6-4 on court three for her second singles win of the spring. Junior Julia Mikulski gave Florida State a 3-0 lead after taking down her opponent on court five, 6-2, 6-3. Garcia clinched her third match of the season on court six winning 6-2, 7-5. With the match clinched the Seminoles won two more matches as Hule won in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 on court two and Rahmanparast won 6-1, 6-7(2), 10-4 on court four.
“We were contested in a lot of spots and a did a great job staying in the matches and did not let up,” said Hyde. “That is the team we are and the team we continue to be.”
“This is a big road win for us, and anytime you can grab a road win in the ACC it is a really good thing. We will now head home and get ready for our match against Pitt to end a long week of preparation.”
The Seminoles will be at home on Sunday as Pitt comes into town. Florida State will take on the Panthers Sunday at 11 a.m.
