No. 25 Florida State Captures ACC Victory over No. 24 NC State 5-2

Florida State men’s tennis started off their road trip in North Carolina with a big ACC victory over No. 24 North Carolina State 5-2 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Complex. After winning all doubles match, Florida State clinched three singles victory to win the overall match. Florida State improves their record to 13-8 and 5-5 in the ACC. NC State slips to 19-8 and 4-6 in the ACC.

In doubles competition, the No. 25 Seminoles shut out the No. 24 Wolfpack winning on all three courts to capture the first match point of the day. On center court, senior and co-captain Jonathas Sucupira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) clinched their second ranked win of the season over NC State’s #21 Nick Cavaday and William Noblitt 8-5. Florida State had another doubles victory in position number two as senior and co-captain Ytai Abougzir (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Bradley Mixson (Miami, Fla.) defeated NCSU’s Jay Weinacker and James McGee 8-6. The final doubles match of the day took place on court three as Florida State’s sophomore Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) and freshman Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) overcame the Pack’s Chris Welte and David Rozek 8-5.

Florida State continued winning in singles action as sophomore Chris Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) downed NCSU’s Andre Iriarte in position six 6-1, 6-4. NC State answered back with a win on court four as Weinacker defeating Chang in two straight sets 6-2, 6-3 while senior Sucupira stepped up in spot number three to defeat the Pack’s James McGee 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Winning another point for the Wolfpack was Noblitt on court two overpowering Sykut in a second set tiebreak 7-5, 7-6 (4). Clinching the match victory for Florida State was Mixson as he fought back to a third set to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 over NC State’s Welte. Center court ended singles competition with Abougzir earning ranked win over #61 Cavaday of NCSU 7-5, 6-3.

Florida State men’s tennis (13-8, 5-5 ACC) will now travel to Winston-Salem to compete in their final match of the regular season on Sunday, April 15 against No. 11 Wake Forest at 12:00 p.m.
