Houston, Texas – Once again this weekend, weather forced a change of plans for the Florida State women’s tennis squad, but they came on top with a 5-1 victory over Houston. With a threat of rain in the area, only singles were played. The Seminoles snapped the Cougars’ 22-match home winning streak that dated back to the 2005 season.
“Nothing affected our play as far as weather goes,” stated head coach Jennifer Hyde. “After this and next weekend, we jump into the beef of our schedule when the level of competition is going to be extreme and we have to make sure we take advantage of these matches. We have to build confidence and get out of our comfort zone before we enter the big weekends and I think we did a good job of that this weekend.”
The Seminoles went 5-1 in singles play with No. 58 freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) leading the way with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Loli Gomez. Junior Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) topped Anna Djanaova 6-1, 6-3 while freshman Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) won 6-3, 6-1 over Sonja Nikolic.
Junior Tapiwa Marobela (Gaborone, Botswana) continued her winning ways with a victory of 6-3, 6-1 on Neila Starratt while senior Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) rounded out the Seminoles winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 over Vicky Simpson. Senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) battled hard, but fell 6-2, 5-7, 6-7 (5-7) over Leila Salek.
The Seminoles host Stetson and Florida A&M on Saturday, February 17 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Courts.
