April 18, 2002

#8 FLORIDA STATE (35-12, 3-6 ACC)

The Seminoles are 35-12 on the season after going 1-1 in two mid-week games, losing to South Alabama by a score of 6-5 in 10 innings Tuesday night in Tallahassee and defeating Jacksonville 13-4 on the road Wednesday night. After opening ACC action with nine road games, FSU will play host to four consecutive conference series starting this weekend with No. 5 Georgia Tech. Florida State stayed at No. 8 in Monday’s Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll after taking all three games at Miami last weekend for the first time in school history. FSU won five of six against UM for the first time since 1991. The Seminoles, who have more victories than any team in the country, are led by senior All-America third baseman Ryan Barthelemy (.389, 12 HR, 64 RBI).

#5 GEORGIA TECH (32-5, 7-3 ACC)

The Yellow Jackets have won 18 of their last 20 games and moved to 32-5 on the season after defeating Auburn 10-4 on Tuesday night. Georgia Tech is currently ranked No. 5 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll and third in the ACC. SS/DH Victor Menocal (.408, 1 HR, 30 RBI) and 2B Eric Patterson (.383, 3 HR, 25 RBI) lead the Yellow Jackets offensively. Tech’s probable weekend rotation: LHP Kyle Bakker (9-0, 2.72 ERA) Friday, RHP Jeff Watchko (6-1, 3.24) Saturday & RHP Kyle Schmidt (3-0, 2.47) Sunday.

Florida State leads the all-time series 48-23, which dates back to 1959. The two teams met four times last year, including one meeting in the ACC Tournament. Last year, the Yellow Jackets took two of three from the Seminoles in Atlanta (8-9, 6-2, 2-12). Tech took a third game from the Tribe in the second round of the 2001 ACC Tournament 6-5 (10 innings). Georgia Tech hasn’t won a series in Tallahassee since 1994 and FSU is 28-9 at Dick Howser Stadium vs. Tech all-time.

Saturday’s 1:00 p.m. game will be televised live by Fox Sports South and Sunshine Network as the ACC Game of the Week.
