No. 8 Women’s Hoops Stymies Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (AP) – Nicole Ekhomu scored 16 points and Ivey Slaughter had 14 points and 10 rebounds to help No. 8 Florida State beat Minnesota 75-61 on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Center Chatrice White added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Seminoles (7-1). They have won their six straight.

Florida State outrebounded Minnesota 51-32, including 23 offensive rebounds — leading to 18 second-chance points.

Kenisha Bell scored 17 points and Carlie Wagner added 15 for the Gophers (4-3). They have lost three in a row.

The Seminoles used a 12-2 run at the start of the second quarter to open up a 42-19 lead, their biggest of the night.

• Freshman guard Nicole Ekhomu finished with a career-high 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, while adding two blocks.
• Junior forward Shakayla Thomas’ three blocked shots are a season high.
• Senior forward Ivey Slaughter recorded her 20th career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Slaughter’s 14 points marked her 53rd double-figure game of her career.
• FSU’s eight 3-point field goals made are a season high.
• FSU generated 18 points off offensive rebounds and out-scored Minnesota 37-20 off the bench.
• Junior center Chatrice White finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. She has recorded double-figure point totals in all three of her games against Minnesota, averaging 17.5 points and 10 rebounds coming in.
• Redshirt junior guard Imani Wright’s 11 points marked her sixth double-figure game of the season.
• The Seminoles improve to 8-2 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, currently the best record among active ACC programs.
• FSU’s victory over Minnesota marked its second straight game winning against a Big Ten opponent after defeating Michigan, 76-62, in the Paradise Jam Championship.
• FSU has defeated multiple Big Ten schools in one season for the second time in program history. The other year was the 2007-08 year.
• FSU is now 4-1 on the road in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
• The Seminoles’ 56 points at halftime were a season high.
• FSU made seven 3-point field goals in the first half to tie its season high.
• Florida State jetted out to a 30-17 first period lead, tying its season high for points in the opening period.
• Despite finishing the game at 42 percent shooting, FSU was bolstered by a huge first half where it shot 67.6 percent (21-of-31) from the floor.
