Chicago, Ill. – The No. 9 ranked Florida State women’s tennis team (6-0) advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships for the first time in program history on Friday in Chicago at the XS Tennis Village. The Seminoles took down No. 7 Texas (4-1) in a thrilling 4-3 victory that ended with No. 86 ranked Senior Nandini Das coming in clutch and winning the match for the Noles.
“Another complete team effort got the win again tonight,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “That did not come easy, both teams played unbelievably well on all courts. It was going to come down to a couple of points and the mental fortitude of the players. This is a huge win for our program, I’m just really happy that the team believes in each other and has confidence in one another. We are going to enjoy this one as long as we can, but we know that we have to jump right back on the court and take on a very good UCLA team.”
The Garnet and Gold started the match by taking an early 1-0 lead after rallying from behind to earn the doubles point. The Longhorns struck first by taking court one 6-2. Junior Emmanuelle Salas and freshman Sasha hill came back from being down 4-5 to win on court three 7-5. The senior duo of Das and Andrea Garcia clinched the point by fighting off a 2-4 deficit to win the match 7-5 on court two.
In singles, freshman Victoria Allen dominated on court five 6-3, 6-1 to give the Noles a 2-0 lead over Texas. The Longhorns didn’t back down as they proceeded to take court one 6-3, 6-1 and court two 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match 2-2.
Garcia took care of business on court six 6-4, 6-4 to give Florida State the 3-2 advantage. Once again, Texas struck back with a victory on court four where Hill came up short after battling to a first set tie break 7-6 (7-4) to later drop the second set 6-0.
It all came down to the decisive match on court three between No. 86 Das and Adri Nagy of Texas. The senior was down 4-3 in the first set tiebreaker and rallied back to win four-consecutive points to claim the set, 7-5. Nagy went on to take the second set and the match continued on into the third set. Das took an early lead in the third 4-2 but the Longhorns tied it up at 4-4. Das then went on two win two consecutive points to clinch the dual-match victory for Florida State.
No. 9 Florida State women’s tennis team will be back at it again in Chicago, Ill. as they take on No. 4 UCLA in the second round of the ITA National Indoor Championships at 3:30 p.m. CT.
Noles in the Polls
In the latest Oracle/ITA poll, Florida State comes in at No. 9, which is the highest ranking in program history. Their highest ranking before this was No. 10 on April 13. 2019.
The Seminoles have one ranked singles player in senior Nandini Das, who was ranked No. 86 in the latest Oracle/ITA poll. Along with two ranked doubles pairs in No. 15 junior Petra Hule and freshman Victoria Allen, and No. 16 ranked junior Emmanuelle Salas and Allen.
