Jan. 29, 2012

WACO, Texas – Coming down the wire, the No. 42 Florida State men’s tennis team suffered their first loss of the season falling to No. 8 Baylor 4-3. In the four hour match, the 3-1 Bears and 7-1 Seminoles went back and forth until the last point at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University.

“It was a great college match,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I am really proud of how we played and competed today. Baylor has a great program and always has. Having a lot of people fighting bodes well for our future with how well we played today.”

Baylor won the first point of the match after winning on court one and two of doubles. In singles play, freshman Benjamin Lock came out swinging to drop Julian Bley on court six 6-2, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1. Next off was sophomore Blake Davis who lost to No. 54 Roberto Maytin 6-4, 7-5 on court two. To tie the match up at 2-2, junior Andres Bucaro defeated Robert Verzaal on court four. After dropping the first set, Bucaro only lost three games to win the match 1-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Junior Jordan Kelly-Houston faced No. 20 Mate Zsiga on court one but fell 7-5, 7-6 (2) for Baylor to take the 3-2 lead. Senior Jason Zafiros faced Kike Grangeiro on court five to win his first set and then drop his second set. After being down 3-1 in the third, Zafiros battled back and fought through five match points to win the match 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

“I was pleased of the fight we showed today with Jason coming back to win after facing five match points,” continued Hultquist. “It was great to see Benjamin continue to learn to see Andres win his match after losing his first set. We had a great effort from a lot of people. Jordan kept fighting even though he was down and so did Blake. Cristian was down a set and fought through match points as well.”

With the match tied at 3-3, the match came down to court three with freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and Marko Krickovic. Gonzalez Mendez lost his first set but came back to win the tight second set. After battling back in forth in the third, Baylor came out on top to win 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
