Game Notes vs North Carolina

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Fourth-ranked Florida State (37-11, 17-7) returns to ACC play this weekend as the Seminoles travel to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina (29-19, 13-11) for a three-game series beginning Friday, May 9 at 7:00 p.m.

Florida State enters the series winners of four straight, while its magic number to clinch an eighth consecutive ACC Atlantic Division title sits at two with six games remaining. Clemson currently sits in second place in the division, 4.5 games back of the Seminoles.

The Seminoles and Tar Heels are meeting in a regular season series for the first time since 2011 when UNC took 2-of-3 from FSU in Tallahassee.

The two schools wrapped up their regular season schedule last year in a one-game showdown in Chapel Hill in front of a national audience on ESPNU. The Tar Heels broke a 3-3 tie scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-out RBI single by Brian Holberton off Jameis Winston. Trent Thornton, UNC’s starter this Friday, entered the game with two outs in the top of the seventh and got the Tar Heels out of a bases loaded jam. He worked the final 2.1 innings to run his record to 9-1 on the year.

North Carolina has won three straight in the series with Florida State’s last win coming in Tallahassee in 2011, a 5-3 victory. The last time the two teams squared off in Chapel Hill, FSU took two of three from UNC back in of 2010. The Tar Heels hold the slimmest advantage on their home turf owning a record of 16-15 against the Noles.

This weekend’s series marks just the third time FSU has played UNC in Chapel Hill since 2007 as the three-game series in 2008 was played at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. due to stadium renovations at Boshamer Stadium.

Dating back to 2005, the series has been closely contested as 18 of the last 25 games have been decided by three or less including three games that have gone to extra innings. FSU is 13-5 during that span. Ten of the last 12 games in the series have been decided by three runs or less.

Among the list of winningest active D1 coaches by victories and winning percentage, both FSU head coach Mike Martin and UNC head coach Mike Fox rank in the top 10. Martin and Fox rank 1-2 in winning percentage and second (1,807) and seventh (1,262) in victories.
